LONG DISTANCE TRIALS AND
RALLIES - DIRECTORY OF EVENTS

|
??? against a date represents the
2008 past date - am awaiting 2009 date - if you know it please tell me.
Many thanks.
Mail
me at briansussex@antispam.hotmail.com (remove
antispam first!) with corrections or additions please.

further information about ACTC clubs and the ACTC
Motorcycle Championship events -

LDTs - as a rule of thumb these are suitable
for smaller (around 250cc) singles with low gearing, reasonable
torque but, essentially, a good lock to be able to manoeuvre in
tight sections. Also a good idea to pick a lightish model (as you
are likely to be picking it up out of the mud regularly if you ride
like me!). If you are the competitive type, look at last year's
results and see what bikes finished in the top 20 of the event you
are interested in.
Rallies - quite a different kettle of fish.
Much depends on the individual event but, most importantly, the
weather! I haven't been able to do any of the rallies so if anyone
can advise which ones are suitable for bigger bikes then I am happy
to add the information.

All New Beacons Rally -
(new event for 2009)
- start at Llandovery Rugby Club.
As a replacement for the Crychan 2-day, a Beacons Trail Bike Rally
will be organised on the weekend of 22nd / 23rd
August in the same forest, with the start at Llandovery Rugby Club.
This will follow the format of the established Red Kite and Cambrian

Witley LDT - start on A3 south
of Guildford, 70 - 100 miles around Surrey/Hants/West Sussex lanes, 10
-12 sections. Apparently doable on a 650 Dakar or similar size bike.
Can get a bit rutted and slippery when wet.
Might have to dab a lot to pull the bike round the
tighter sections but it would still be a great day out with lots of
great laning. Probably not suitable for
Boxer GS.

Swindonian LDT -
90 miles - 20 sections on Wiltshire downland - The
Start and Finish will be at The Black Horse Inn, Upper Wanborough,
Nr. Swindon, Wiltshire. Probably doable on a Boxer GS - might have to dab a
lot to pull the bike round the tighter sections but it would still
be a great day out with lots of great laning. |

The Ilkley Classic Trial
- open to cars and a restricted invitation event status for
motorcycles. A
chance to return to the rarely-trialled (in recent years anyway)
Yorkshire Dales, this event is open to a wide selection of clubs
including all ACTC member clubs including the MCC and VSCC. Although
well outside the normal trialling season we should, at least, have a
fighting chance of good weather in a wonderful part of the
countryside. |

Jubilee Trial (LDT)
- solos only - many of the sections are too extreme for sidecars
never mind cars - about 150 riders - 55 miles on fantastic
countryside of the Brendon Hills and Exmoor - starts
and finishes at the Raleghs Cross Inn at Brendon Hill at 9am -
20 observed sections and special tests. Definitely the highlight of the year - the weather is at
least warmer if not drier, and the daylight is longer (v.
important). Most trials will forbid walking of a section before you
ride it - in the Jubilee many sections can be walked if you wish -
if that doesn't tell you all you need to know re
difficulty . . . the Jubilee is also much more physically demanding
than the other daytime trials. |
